Not sure if this was just my own experience (but I;d wager not), but add to that general lack of supervision the trips to seedy county fairs where pretty much any 12 year old boy with money could get their hands on a variety of zippo lighters and knives.

Within orthodox Judaism there isn't like official divides as you have between orthodox reform and conservative sects of Judaism, but there are sort of subgroups that have differ, mostly in terms of the way they approach the secular world at large.

Even growing up on Long Island and going to private Jewish schools the feelings about Christmas music and all of that had the same effect of highlighting the outsider status of being a Jew (and the tokenism stuff always made it worse).
