Agreed on the shelter dog and especially that mutts are sturdier. The dog we had was from North Shore Animal League ( and was a "Heinz 57" and like I said lived 16 years and only got really sick those last few weeks.

My family got a dog when I was in 2nd grade that lived 16 years (and he was only really sick the last few weeks) and it was just brutal, I couldn't even stay in the room when they put him down.  It also made me pretty sure that I'd be against getting my own children a dog just to spare them that pain.
