Clumsy phrasing indeed. Most people liked him in the role (including me; big fan of that performance), but there was a lot of skepticism when those set-photos first surfaced. Technically, he *is* far more miscast in this film, in the sense that he wasn't miscast at all in TOUR. But I'll grant you, clumsy.

I couldn't fit in anything about him being a vet (it is literally addressed only once, at the beginning of the movie, with a photograph), but it does seem significant, doesn't it?
