Added a note about this to the intro, but we only selected movies that opened theatrically in the U.S. in 1997. Cure didn't hit American theaters until 2001. Otherwise, it certainly would be here.

We went by U.S. theatrical release, as is the traditional best-of protocol round these parts. (I should probably note that above.) Taste Of Cherry didn't make it Stateside until 1998. Princess Mononoke was two years later.
