I remember watching this show and not really noticing that it was a predominately black cast. It was just a cute, harmless, sitcom to me.
My wife has read the books, I have not. She would agree with this. I felt the show was a fun spectacle - but even to a non-reader it felt really stretched out and didn't need to be the focus of an entire episode.
