To some extent Pirates Of The Caribbean is an example, at least by being different as the series went on. It's now sort of known as a series of special effects bonanzas, but the original Curse Of The Black Pearl is forgotten as an absolutely solid film with subtext and a statement.

I've never bothered with the later Lethal Weapon movies, which apparently co-star Joe Pesci as Sophia Petrillo.
