Having not read the book (and not being much of a pure horror fan), i definitely favour Kubrick's adaptation. i think the best indication that this is true is to compare King's own adaptation of The Shining to Kubrick's adaptation - it's a lumbering 10-hour beast with little tension or mystery. It seems to me that King is too in love with every beat and prop and phrase in his books to recognize the necessity of distilling…
