Also, he and Kermit have the most history out of all the Muppets (possibly excluding Piggy), so they have that friendship angle to play off of.

Sonic got the first three, but Robotnik got the fourth and used it to steal the other three, became super-powerful, but eventually lost the emeralds to Sonic, who became Super-Sonic and beats him. I forget what they did with emeralds after that, but great arc definitely.

The Chaos Emerald Saga from Adventures was actually pretty serious, especially the last part.
