Inclusiveness of women from all walks of life. I seriously wish she'd be more expansive in her feminist criticism.
Ouch.
Judy Wajcman is just fucking phenomenal, if you're going to start anywhere start with her papers.
I'm working on it. I'd say her impact is minimal other than bringing controversy and bringing misogyny of gamers/gamergaters to the fore.
Or you could attempt to reach out to them and show them the error in their ways, gaining a powerful ally knowledgeable in a viewpoint. Dehumanizing another group of people only serves in making you feel better about yourself.
I'd say it's a stretch to say that Sarkeesian has emboldened female gamers, more that it's a result of gaming being more mainstream. Knowing that some gamers are misogynists was pretty well known in the gaming community. Women have been mocking them since forever.
That's a bit of a false analogy. A center-right party like the Democrats can't effectively liberalize a Right-wing party like the Republicans.
In showing the cause and effect of a singular, big-money game on the entire industry. As stated earlier by me and ignored by you. And as noted by me and others, her commentary isn't particularly substantive/important (or inclusive). Simply, it's silly that she's getting death threats over bad feminism.
Well Gamergate was the action against a woman for an alleged act of impropriety, which then ballooned into an organized movement to shame her under the guise of looking after the sanctity of games journalism. It's just that the same dross that were in on this movement were the type to be offended by Sarkeesian's work…
She could absolutely do a youtube video about this, discussion of videogames would nearly necessitate use of footage. If her goal is to produce something shallow, then she accomplished it. I sincerely wished she made something with more substance. Then again it sounds like I confused you with mentioning thesis. When I…
I disagree, maybe I'm in thesis-writing mode but an in-depth exploration of a AAA game's use of a sexist aspect, the impact/influence of that game's success on other games, and the writers of certain games/segements/scenarios would have a better impact than "Here are some games with this certain trope. This trope is…
That she sees feminism as distinctly pacifist is essentialist bullshit. It's kind of the same way that ecofeminism sees woman as the nuturer, without realizing how problematic that is. Not only in perpetuating gender roles, but being trans*-exclusive.
Criticizing Wall-E and Bruno will get you more views.
If she was looking to explore the sexism inherent in tropes I'd like to think she'd pick more substantive examples. The method of impacting games production through the exploration of certain tropes would be through the behest of the public. But if that public does not play games, does not give money to the producers…
What's your suggested action against hate groups?
You already have an existing community that's not particularly misogynist, just have a tendency towards misogynistic attitudes. Changing their minds would be the most efficient route.
If she's looking to actually change the hearts and minds of a misogynistic community then it's a HUGE failure. The more obvious reason for my saying she lacked doing necessary research is that she went to a known group of reactionary people, did something that would obviously cause them to be reactionary, and then was…
It really is a field, and does actually present some higher intellectual barriers to entry. They simply don't seem apparent because anybody and everybody can watch a movie and read a [x]-ist blogpost and pair them together. It takes more research and studying to say something substantive and for others to build on it.
Protip: I'm a hardcore feminist. My criticism of Sarkeesian is that her work is shallow and more fame-oriented. I could also tack on that she's the epitome of White feminism, that she doesn't focus on Women of Color nearly enough, and she's a borderline SWERF.
