Or at least, if you're going to put yourself in your movies, have that character die in as horrible and/or ridiculous a manner as possible.

I love Mystery Men unreservedly. I agree with you that it's never going to make top 10 lists of greatest comedies ever made, but it's a film, along with Galaxy Quest, that is eminently re-watchable and still very funny.
