Of all the Marvel movies, that one has held up the best. I rewatched Winter Soldier and it seemed incredibly soulless compared to the First Avenger.

That's an opinion a lot of people share by the way. Iron Man has a very lean, well-oiled plot. Avengers has that incredibly contrived hero fight in the beginning and the big fight with the aliens in the end also seemed incredibly trite.

That's the issue isn't it? Studios are financing superhero films at the expense of something with a smaller scale or a genre movie with an original script.
