Chamberlain is pretty well known to the non ignorant. I think ive heard said that Churchill is actually more admired in the US than the UK not sure now accurate that is.

I never really saw the TV show until Comedy Central starting showing reruns in the afternoon in the early 90's. Wish Comedy Central still showed that and MST3K.

I love Grail and Brian, and they are better than Life, but I always felt Life captured the spirit of the original sketches more than the other films.

I'd say he was well regarded and that is what most here are stating. I would also say that he was more highly regarded because he lived and worked so long. Longevity gets respect.

So many things have to come together to win an Oscar, especially for Leading Actor. Its sort of like saying someone is "coasting" on a Pulitzer or something. But Im just bringing it up for conversation I know you apologized. Lord knows there are some bad Oscar awards out there………But I think Marty was more than earned.

1. A WW2 veteran. Respect.
2. As I said elsewhere, he could play hero or heel and be convincing in either.
3 He was a powerful looking man. No one doubted that he could kill Sinatra with his bare hands in Eternity.
4. Unlike most of of Hollywood today, he looked like a real person, not some pretty boy.

Yeah good answer. He is very menacing as Fatso Judson. I think his biggest gift as an actor is he could play salt of the eath good guy or scary as shit bad guy.
