The best thing ever for a bachelor to learn is how to make tomato sauce.  Just tinned tomatoes, tomato paste, some garlic and spices (and wine - bachelor's got to have lots of wine around).  Homemade is infinitely better than bottled stuff, and you can just do anything with it.
