No kidding.  The last two posts say more about people's true positions than anything in this thread.

Except art is a shared experience.  Saying "You don't have to do this…" doesn't change the art anymore than saying "You don't have to look at the larger canvas around the individual painting…"   The point is that DC is trying to tack on stuff to Watchmen with the intent that it is part of Watchmen.   Nobody has to

No, it wouldn't be a kindness.  It wouldn't be accurate at all.  Clearly, they inspired the Watchmen characters.  But Rorshach isn't the Question, the Comedian isn't the Peacemaker, etc.   Those characters were influenced by other characters.  If we're shutting down influences as some sort of intellectual property

Are we now listing influences as the same thing as plagiarism?   Because about all of fiction writers would be screwed in this case.

I hate when people prop up the history of comics screwing people over as some sort of defense for this stuff.   It was particularly galling when JMS did it.  "Hey things have always been bad for creators, why change things now?"  Because its no longer the 1940s and 1950's?  Because we evolve as a society?

Let's blame Disney buying Marvel.  That's what did it.  It made the news and suddenly Warner Bros was like "Don't we own a comic company, too?"

It is a more fitting example because of the intent of this miniseries.  This is not supposed to be a reinterpretation of these characters.   This is supposed to be a continuation of Moore's stories.  Some of their backstory is being revealed that is probably much different than Moore intended and some of their

Alan Moore himself has said he doesn't want to do any more work in the big two companies on non-creator owned characters because he has changed his mind on the subject.

"Velasquez' Portrait of Pope Innocent X was intended as a complete work - can't get much more complete than a painting. Does that mean Francis Bacon should have been excoriated for reinterpreting it?"

And you're from the past?  When that comment was cool and funny?  You guys will have an interesting conversation.

Except Nite Owl has been regarded as kind of terrible from everybody with a modicum of taste.  So now there is at least one more crappy Watchmen comic than there ever was before.
