I remember reading (many years ago) that Midnite Vultures was supposed to be the follow-up to Odelay, but a lot of the work was lost in a hard drive failure. So he threw mutations together in the meantime.

Same thing here. I've seen them twice, once in 2002 and again in 2008. Both were incredible shows, but you're right, the first one was very, very different.
