I guess the heterosexuality is what made the "gayness" (as opposed to homosexuality) so subtle. My reading was really a cultural one, considering the ambiguous sexual identities of the two celebrities, rather than a gender/sexuality one. I can't disagree with you, though, and the subversion was nice.
