I'm two episodes in, and still waiting for these "non stop laughs" the reviews keep promising. Occasionally something laughworthy, but mostly just the occasional smile. I'm clearly missing something here.

That's not entirely true. More correct to say they ditched a lot of the material from the 2nd and 3rd book, but the events of the finale here were from the 3rd book.
