My issue is that the growth of the infrastructure, whether roads, canals, telephone/telegraph/internet access, what have you, was so intertwined with the growth of the tradition of central government that it's hard to see one surviving the collapse of the other. Maybe, but without a modern transportation or telecommunications system and with the amount of military hardware lying around, it seems unlikely that you'd be able to project power or control effectively over such a large land area. This is exactly why the states were so powerful in early American history.
