Coming in way late on this… but my memory of the pilot is that this attitude was WAY toned down back when he also recognized her authority as a legitimate naval officer. He didn't let his feelings show until after she mutinied and shot one of his men.

Did a recent rewatch of The West Wing. It holds up well. On the other hand, it makes me even MORE angry about how terrible the Newsroom is.
