The book briefly mentions the stone-giants playing catch with rocks, but there's not much detail.

I bought Half Magic based on that comment and the Quentin Blake cover too.

Congratulations!
Radagast is only mentioned in passing by Gandalf to Beorn in the book. But I enjoyed the movie sequence especially Sebastian the hedgehog. It felt most like the book in tone, in terms of being a children's story. And it makes sense that Gandalf would be motivated to leave the dwarves' quest to deal

I watched it in 2-D and really liked it. I usually find even regular 3-D to be fairly distracting so this was the best option.

The movie is the first six chapters of the book but also includes stuff from the LotR appendices.

I loved the movie too. Even the slow build-up before they set off for the quest worked for me as there are so many action sequences in the later part. It also gives us a sense of Bilbo's reluctance to leave the comforts of home contrasted with a latent desire for adventure.

I actually quite like Gaskell's writing, so your mileage may vary. I also found it interesting that the plot was basically like Pride and Prejudice in a social realist novel.
The only other Gaskell I've read is Cranford. It's wittier and lighter in tone, but more a series of disjointed episodes than a straight
