Elvis Costello
is to my own mind, just so goddamn lame. I don't think he's terrible, is the thing; he's just so thoroughly mediocre and unremarkable that I can't understand why his music is so popular.

Yep; "Interested." You fill in the blanks. Hot dogs, No-Doze, hot sex in back rows.

For me, 2666
and homophobia, which no matter how much I examine it, really and truly seems to come from the author, not just the characters and situations. But goddamn, that is a fantastic book.

Oh, and nor do I think it is necessary for everyone to continually disavow music they listened to 10 or 12 or 20 years ago. You can still think some things are good while realizing that you might not like them if they came out now. That's OK.

I will say
that is seems silly to have to like something like Built to Spill or Elliott Smith at the exclusion of something else like Korn or Limp Bizkit. Can't a person like one of those things without categorically stating that the other is absolutely terrible and insubstantial?

That last one
is pretty good. I mean, they really fit a lot of references in there. I wonder how long it took to make. It does seem like a lot of effort.

But if I always kid death, his ideas would not listen to the right genius. Even I defend the musical.

How odd
to find a mention of this event here. Not your usual AV Club fare. But if you folks wanted to generally have more articles about contemporary classical music, I, for one, would not complain. I can't say I'm always a huge fan of MB's sonic output, but I appreciate his ideas, even if I don't always agree with

Little Earthquakes and Boys for Pele are both fairly strong albums, with a few exceptions. The latter also tends to suffer from a bit of production cheesiness, and the former from too many descents into childhood character twee-ness. However, Under the Pink, I still feel, is a fantastic album. More or less across

I [Heart] a Magician
is an awesome song. Not only that, it brings the energy back up after The Jitters, and provides a great ending from which to start the slower synth drums of You Are Invited. I'm just going to have to get on the 'take it back' bandwagon for that one.

The more people who quote Captain Beefheart, the better!

Fast and bulbous! Also, a tin teardrop.

And the sky turned white in the middle of the night, and the sky turned white in the middle of the night!!!
If you fall in my circle again, I'll tan your red hide and dance you on your tail, and pitch you from now and now, pitch you from now and now.

Speaking of the Dismemberment Plan and premature discontinuation,
I really feel like Emergency and I and then Change were just great albums, and that another proper LP would have been fantastic.

"And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all." What an excellently bleak line. I love it.

I'm going to ditto the Hop-Frog comment, because I perceive you are sulky, and want more wine. That story is great.

I was totally going to comment on this fact, but wasn't exactly surprised when my search for crepuscular turned up not one but two results. It certainly is an excellent word.

Truedat, truedat.

Sorry, perhaps I've been misunderstood; the main thing that I personally think hasn't aged well about Ten is the production, which tends to be very reverb-y and mixed in a way that strikes me as 80's-ish and somewhat cheesy. The whole thing certainly is a bit classic-rock-anthem-y in a way that isn't always

This does seem like a great series
that I will totally enjoy. However, I do have to take issue with some of these albums as having "aged badly." Have you actually listened to Siamese Dream or Superunknown recently, for example? Not that I haven't expanded my musical range to encompass all different kinds of rock,
