The superstition was sorta an old-timey PSA to get people not to leave their babies unattended, lest they be stolen away and "changed" by something evil.

Part of the momentum dragging the show down, I think, is the Ben-Leslie relationship stuff. I get that they have to work together and it's hard, but too many episodes this season have teased the "will they really be able to stay broken up?" aspect. NO.
