In that case… desert. At least some tiny chance of finding cacti or oases or something, as opposed to salt water surrounding you… wait — am I stranded on a boat, a raft, a door? This is important.

Tricky one. Are the odds of help arriving equally minute? At sea there might be ships and in the desert, some planes are bound to fly over. Maybe the occasional camel herder. There'd be planes crossing the sea, of course, but those may not have the water ski things.
