IMHO, if you ONLY watch Shogun Assassin without picking up the source material (the epic-length Lone Wolf & Cub manga), then you're only getting 10% of the awesome, if that. Koike and Kojima put together a pulp masterpiece, with cinematic art, literary writing, and enough sex and blood to power an engine fueled by

I scrolled down just to make the same exact comment, word-for-word.

Dammit, now I'll never get to see a live GWAR show. Fuck. RIP

Drive is to car/action movies what Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is to spy movies.

I love it when Dewey talks about his "times" - "These are the end times for Dewey Crowe" and "These are the golden times for Dewey Crowe" gives you just a glimpse of what is going through that dumbass' head.

Watched this last night. Adding OldBoy to my list of superfluous and largely inferior American remakes in the last decade. The biggest offender is currently DePalma's Passion (an almost hilariously bad remake of Love Crime).

Nice nod to The Godfather with Boyd's execution of the old man, very Paulie Gatto/Carlo Rizzi.

I'm going to leave biotech and telecom just to create TV shows and movies to star Natalie Zea and Alicia Witt.

Caught the late show. Besides a very giggly and handsy middle-aged couple, I was the only person in the theater.

Here's a truncated version of the review, where only sentences that aren't qualified internally or by a later sentence with a political or "you got the history wrong" statement:

"…may find their enjoyment soured by the perverse political power fantasies which are the film’s raison d’être." <—- there are three big assumptions in that sentence: 1) the political power fantasy is at the heart of the movie; 2) the viewer who goes to this movie for thrills is going to perceive or even acknowledge

Serious LOLs. Thumbs up.

Liam Neeson & Sam Jackson pair up to make the action blockbuster of the summer - the remake of the Jean-Claude Van Damme/Dennis Rodman vehicle, DOUBLE TEAM.

He's not making the distinction. He's saying,

FUCK YEAH LIAM NEESON

I come to the AV Club because I usually respect the reviews written. I've discovered a few gems combing thru the reviews. Besides Crank 2, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was another movie I wouldn't have bothered with, except the review intrigued me. Glad I saw it - it's one of my favorite flicks of the last decade. AV

Because, like junk food that sucks, sometimes big dumb action movies aren't actually entertaining. So I read reviews of big dumb action movies to see if they are, in fact, entertaining. And I get pissed off when I slog my way through a review and not find the information I'm looking for.

I'm gonna complain that a review of big dumb movie that no one is supposed to take seriously doesn't tell if me if the big dumb movie is a big, dumb, ENTERTAINING movie.

Coulda fooled me, buddy. Must have been that pretty much every other sentence in this review had to either point out that the historical context or that this flick is chock-full of misogyny, racism, or xenophobia.

Aaaaaaand like his terrible Ender's Game review, Ignatiy proves once again that, once politically riled, he is incapable of just reviewing any damned movie on its own merits.
