"That Smell" isn't really an "anti" drug song or, more broadly, "anti" substance abuse song. It's more gallows humor about the life that Skynyrd was leading, and planned to continue to lead indefinitely (small aircraft not withstanding).

Note: Skynyrd isn't from Alabama, if that's the awful home you're referring to.

I've long assumed with no evidence whatsoever (and despite all history to the contrary) that this will be the case and ADOS will come out pretty quickly after TWOW. I'm kind of optimistic that just writing the whole thing right now because, all jokes aside, he really does want to get done before HBO does.

I could see GoT providing the "ending," but still not really touching on most of the things that most book fans are really interested in — R+L, weirwoods/Old Gods/children of the forest, Summerhall, etc. Sort of like knowing that Watt Earp survives the shootout at the OK Coral doesn't ruin "My Darling Clementine."
