It also solves that 'one verse/chorus too long' problem by excising the second-to-last verse.

There's a bit of Zevon in a lot of her material if I'm remembering right. She was definitely more wry than the majority of country ladies in that era at least, it's one of the reasons I can still listen to Come On, Come On without cringing like i would with, say, a similarly timed Reba album.

Gentlemen and Black Love hold a special place in my heart (short version: high school break up, lost weekend) but Congregation is tits too. I'd be remiss not to mention the Uptown Avondale EP either especially because "Come See About Me" is probably the best Motown cover ever.

Yourself or Someone Like You was one of the first CDs I owned, so it has a definite nostalgic value on top of having some surprisingly good deep cuts. I really could do with never hearing "3AM" again though.

But then it became the template for all her other songs and the bloom fell off the rose…

The song is endearing in that it's clear that she's …kind of a bitch in this situation and oblivious to that fact in the song's narrative but totally in on it as the singer of said narrative if that makes sense. It probably doesn't. And I think I developed Stockholm Syndrome w/r/t the grunting; it started out annoying…
