Killed by Death is hardly representative of Buffy. The show is not usually that scary, Hush aside. Most of the monsters are kinda goofy looking, honestly. (Don't get me started on the werewolves.)

I like Season 5, too. It's kind of an Angel story arc done with the Scooby Gang, don't you think? Buffy was never so epic as in S5.
