In a way, having Gyllenhaal get over her self-harm issues is a cop-out because she's another woman who becomes "more complete" by finding the right man. On the other hand, it's a romantic story, and that's just how they work. And it's notable that Gyllenhaal's character is the dynamic type who incites many incidents……
