you're misremembering how that plot went in TLA.  aang didn't make any fire himself in season 1.  that fire teaching guru gave him an already burning leaf to practice his control.  aang did the opposite, made a fireball, and accidently hurt katara and got his emotional block on the element that he had to resolve later…
