The best thing about this movie
Here's something that almost justifies this movie's existence.
Bezoar
Bezoars are "like hairballs," but in humans they don't typically contain any actual hair.
My best burger
I used to live in Bend, Oregon. There was a burger place there called Pilot Butte Burger that had the best burgers I've ever tasted.
It may not have been the best celebrity cameo ever, but it beat the hell out of Britney Spears.
On the whole, I actually like "Everything Must Go" a little better than "Two Against Nature." If you're talking about best songs on Two Against Nature, though, by far the best track on that disc is "West of Hollywood."
I don't have a comprehensive enough collection to give you a definitive answer. But I picked up "Parcel of Rogues" and "Below the Salt" on Emusic, and I love them both.
Thanks for writing about Steely Dan. They've been my favorite band since I discovered them among the old records in my uncle's basement at about 15 years old. That was almost 20 years ago, and I like them more with every listen.
more omissions…
No Stanley Clarke? No Steeleye Span? I'm really genuinely surprised by both of those. They seem right up your alley, and would both fit well with the rest of this weeks' picks.
Backing you up on the deletion of Sarah McLachlan. I tried for years to learn to appreciate her, but I eventually decided she just sucks and threw all her CDs in the trash.
I know I'm in the minority, but I liked Silent Hill. The plot was lame (just like the games), but the atmosphere was pretty well maintained, and I love that they included the Akira Yamaoka music in the film.
As far as new albums, I haven't seen anyone recommend the new Girl Talk yet, so I'll throw in for it. Also, this might not have as much cultural relevance in the USA, but the new Black Mages disc was as good as anything they've ever done.
Samite
I didn't really expect this to be in your collection, but there's a Ugandan musician named Samite who I really think you'd dig.
That would be a great list… child actors who voluntarily let it go and got a real damn job as adults.
I'm a big fan of Chavez Ravine, myself. I know it's not cool to suggest a late-period album by an artist that has been around as long as Cooder, but that disc is phenomenal. Not a bit bloated, even at 70 minutes, and it gets better every time I hear it.
Wow…
Not a single track by Roger Miller or Ry Cooder? Are they all on tape and vinyl?
You misspelled Albuquerque, and there shouldn't be a period after "et" (it's the complete Latin word for "and," not an abbreviation.)
All I've got is "Happy Trails," but it's one of the best live albums I own. You'd have to go as far as The Allman Brothers to find any better blues/jam grooves.
Which Propellerheads did you delete?
I'm not surprised—I know you're not much of a techno guy. But I've got to throw a dissenting opinion in here.
Quicksilver Messenger Service
I'm really surprised to see these guys left out. Maybe before your time?
