Agreed, and it also doesn't let him off the hook for this killing spree; it's just the impetus for all of this.
Obviously there have been a lot of UFO references in the season, but I was surprised that it wound up being a literal flying saucer instead of people attributing lights in the sky, or what have you, to UFOs because its the late 70s and that's on people's minds.
Last episode was him finally getting fed up with a lifetime of racism everywhere he went and from everyone he met. So even though Dodd was the only Gerhardt that was openly disrespectful, he was still "their Indian" instead of his own man.
I'll need more convincing that the UFO 'works' in the context of the season, and the show/movie 'universe'.

I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and say those movies were what they were because of the source material and not because of the writers, directors and (some of the) actors.

It's Canadian, but Corner Gas is a delightful little show about the middle of nowhere. I watched it on YouTube a few years ago, and assume it's still there because the rights holders are too polite to have it taken down.
