I think you just figured out how to make the show awesome— its reality could branch off from the real world starting in 2010, in subtle ways at first, but then (maybe as a season-ender) there's a big electoral outcome alteration. And then some civil war creates a new country named Qumar and we go to war with it.

It really did feel pretty run-of-the-mill for a little while there. Like every episode would have the science lesson of the week that gets Walter and Jesse out of a scrape. Hooray for writers that know how to outgrow a gimmick.
