Well for me and a lot of people it didn't get big for that reason. It got big based on the premise of "We're going to have every fucking dvd. You can watch all the movies!". That was really powerful and seductive and no one seems to care anymore.
It's also absurd that we are going back to a world where aspect ratios are arbitrarily picked by the content provider. And subtitles aren't really switchable.
