The ashtray may have been a gift from before the smoking ban, or it may have been a 'gift' once the smoking ban went into effect.  It isn't like the character is shown smoking, or even hinted at that he smokes.  It is a relic of his time spent on a submarine, not in active use.

You still haven't explained what you mean by black culture.  Yes, his mother is Caucasian.  Is this the Carlton Effect?  Where someone thinks black culture is more homogenized then it is so that if a black person doesn't conform to that idea of black they have their ethnicity questioned?

I'm not sure if this is a joke or not, as the guy playing Superman in the new film is a Brit (Henry Cavill) and it has been somewhat well publicized.

@MediumTalent:disqus It is to much to ask for in a film.  Batman really isn't a very good character for a kid, but they soften them a lot to sell them to kids.  Some characters work generally as is, like Superman or even the Fantastic Four, but some of them have to be watered down to get them appropriate to that…

The short lived but excellent Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon nailed the constant ups and downs of being Spider-Man.  Really Spidey is a character who, while always wins out against villains in a fight, is often really troubled in all other areas.
