I'm beginning to doubt the whole gay thing.
Give it time.
They used to run Tonight Show re-runs but not all stations used them.
I was surprised to learn it lasted as long as it did. The premier was pretty much universally panned and the show was pretty much immediately forgotten.
According to Wikipedia NBC didn't start using the name Saturday Night Live until March 26, 1977.
I stand corrected.
And ever since scouts have been describing the same events with the aid of anatomically correct dolls.
Actually I think Howard Cosell really made MNF work. He would banter (not always good naturedly) with Dandy Don Merideth while Frank Gifford stuck pretty much to the play-by-play. Some of my favorite moments were when Howard and Dandy Don were arguing about some finer point of the game and Dandy Don would retort…
I think the "mood rock" thing came later (and probably because of this sketch). When his ads were on TV he was aiming more for a Frank Sinatra or Neil Diamond vibe.
It must have killed Smithers to say that.

Release the hounds!
I would also like to be 'that guy' for a moment and point out that the show was not called Saturday Night Live at this point. ABC had a prime time show of the same name on Saturday nights that premiered on the same night. This show was called NBC's Saturday Night. It was incredibly confusing to go to school the…
What I find staggering about Carol Burnett winning the Mark Twain award is that both Tina Fey and Will Ferrell won it first. There seems to be some heavy SNL synergy on the selection committee.
For those of you too young to understand Peter Lemon Mood Ring is a parody of Peter Lemongello, a singer who sold over a million albums through direct TV marketing. Between the name and the cheesy style it was hard for a lot of people to believe that Lemongello himself was not a parody.
