Magazines are pretty profitable when sold at full price. That's why a subscription costs a third of the cover price ordinarily.

Do you know how much money it costs to transfer a full 25,000-square-foot bookstore's worth of product? Not only the physical movement, but paying staff to do it? It's not cost-effective for a company hard-up for cash. They may do full clearance sales, or they may return most of the product to settle their gigantic

The attempt to finance a buy of B&N was a desperate last-ditch attempt by Bill Ackman, one of the major Borders shareholders, to actually get something out of his failed investment. Neither bookstore wants the other.

I listened to a whole stack of BJM albums and not a single thing stood out. Dandy Warhols may be dicks and may well have been born sellouts, but at least they had some songs that made some sort of impression. And one great album ("Dandy Warhols Come Down").

Yeah, "Modern Lovers Live" is too important to just dismiss out of hand. Not only does it have 8 minutes of repeated "Ice Cream Man" choruses and false endings (listen close and you can hear all the screams for "Roadrunner" and "Astral Plane") ending with Jonathan yelling "no!" in response to the requests. Plus, it

The Knack were actually a really good power-pop band. "Good Girls Don't" would've been the better choice, though.

"Africa" fucking sucks. "Ride Like the Wind" was the only good choice.

"1941". This is one of the only times ever where this choice has been easy for me.

"Pandemonium Shadow Show" is my favorite.

Yeah, see, it's disappointing to recommend the otherwise outstanding "Personal Best" because it only contains the 3-minute single edit of "Jump Into the Fire". Of course, you can get "Nilsson Schmilsson" on CD for like $4 new now, so you should just do that anyway.

The soundtrack is available on a two-for-one with the "Point!" soundtrack. It's not really worth buying, but "The Cast and Crew" is utterly fucking genius. Here:

Unless everything he's ever written has been ghosted, Bob's writing them. Really, they're some of the best memoirs I've ever read, and I'm ridiculously excited at the prospect of more.

Hall & Oates were legitimately pretty awesome, though. I liked them back when I was a kid and I feel vindicated now that they're hipster-approved. Fuck you, though, hipsters, for liking something I used to get made fun of for!

"The Complete C&H" is 50% off at B&N stores right now. I'm purchasing mine today.

A far more terrifying assignment than being embedded in Iraq with a Marine division.

Do people really not like "Warehouse"? I love that album. It was the first Huskers album I heard, so admittedly that might contribute, but I think it's their second best after "Zen Arcade".

…and have a wild wingding down at the cyclotron?

"Blue Valentine" is awesome. Possibly my favorite of the Elektra years. "Foreign Affairs" is probably the weakest, but I enjoy it anyway.

I made a list a couple years back of my 100 favorite albums for a message board I post on, and "Shake Some Action", "Brain Capers", and "Born to Be With You" all featured prominently. Marry me.

His solo album was utter shit, though.
