Ebert is a good writer, but a bad reviewer. He's got a very flavorful, distinct style of writing and he's incredibly witty, but his reviews are neither very well-reasoned or insightful. He excels at picking out plot holes, but often enough he fails to understand basic elements of movies (like obvious plot points or,

I completely agree. All of his movies have aspects of them that are brilliant - whether they be scenes or themes - but the parts are greater than the sum. I liked what he was attempting with Death Proof and Inglorious Basterds, but the execution was just not great.

Sinister had the best opening of the year. The movie wasn't amazing, but man, that opening was creepy.

As someone who also opposes abortion, I see no problem with October Baby's inclusion on this list. A reviewers job is to explain why they liked or disliked a film - if they disliked a film based on moral grounds, they shouldn't rate it higher simply because it was compentently-made. My worst film of the year is God

I am pleased to see God Bless America lurking at the bottom of your list.

    Thats pretty creepy.

While I agree with you that the "trilogy" stuff reeks of hubris and greed, Warner Brothers and Peter Jackson own the movie rights to The Hobbit and aren't misleading anyone.

Not everybody is as versed in and concious of entertainment as AVClub readers generally are. Its easy to think that only an idiot could mistake Transmorphers for the real thing, but I can easily imagine my father or some of my co-workers, who aren't very knowledable of film, making this mistake. Most people don't pay

Those are good points. I think Birth of a Nation is different because of the context. You could presumebly pull out plenty of explicit examples of racism from that film. If Tyler Perry movies consistently feature him or other men slapping women, that would be a different story.

Yeah, @avclub-cd01e5786d65f27654ca570edef28c69:disqus , I think it cuts both ways. I don't think anyone should be judged based on what they like. If they can explain why they like it and why it works for them, then whats the problem? Art is open to subjective interpretation - if it wasn't, film criticism and anaylsis

@avclub-cd01e5786d65f27654ca570edef28c69:disqus True. I don't mean to bash the AV Club. It's my favourite entertainment website and the maturity and intellect of the people and discussions here is much of the reason. However, thats the reason something like this peeves me on this site whereas I would just ignore it on
