@avclub-cd01e5786d65f27654ca570edef28c69:disqus True. I don't mean to bash the AV Club. It's my favourite entertainment website and the maturity and intellect of the people and discussions here is much of the reason. However, thats the reason something like this peeves me on this site whereas I would just ignore it on

Yeah, @avclub-c156902f5b20b572848be18c11634dfb:disqus pretty much summed up everything I would say on the matter. The implication here (at both this academic conference and in this comment section) is that the people who like these movies are "working class people" who are uneducated and don't know any better.

You sound like the type of person who uses RottenTomatoes scores to decide whether you like something or not.

@avclub-fcb45e971ad4ebd5a613b4bf5a307172:disqus  You misunderstand. I'm not saying disliking something is snobbery. I'm saying it is snobbery when you dislike something and then claim that its objectively bad and make out anyone who doesn't agree with you to be dumb, uneducated or some variation thereof.

Thats more of an argument that the scene is tactless or tasteless, but that doesn't justify labeling Tyler Perry's entire ouevre as misogynistic.

Yes, we should talk about misogyny - the problem is that these movies are not consistently misogynistic, at least any moreso than almost every other movie out there. Rather, movies considered "bad" or "poor" are singled out and then have minor elements extrapolated into examples of extreme misogyny as a way to

    No, they aren't.

I'm really getting sick of this elitist snobbery where everything not liked by the chattering classes of film criticism has to be demonized. Its not enough to say you don't like a movie, now you have to also label it some malicious upholder of the patriarchy or some combination of misogynstic, homophobic or racist.

But would you be OK with this if it was anyone other than Americans as the target? Would you be OK with an American rapper singing to "kill the fuckin chinese who are communists/kill their wives and daughters slowly".

I don't think "Bullshit" should be anywhere near the words "skepticism" or "critical thinking". I was into that show for a brief period, until I realised that pretty much every argument they make is complete nonsense, either factually and scientifically incorrect or poorly reasoned. They seem to just choose

Moore sinks to their level with some regularity? How about all the time. I was actually shocked when I re-read Stupid White Men to see just how extreme and ridiculous he is most of the time.
