Loved Haywire. Nothing ground-breaking, but like the Limey, a great little genre pic. Very cleverly done, I thought.
RE, Tasha's comment on Cabin in the Woods, that "it didn’t find its audience in theaters" — I don't think that's true. I've seen reports that it made about $60 million — not huge, but well beyond (perhaps twice) its budget.

I view Cy Tolliver somewhat differently. To me, Deadwood was about relative morality. In the beginning, Swearingen was the villain. Then Tolliver came along and put Swearingen into perspective. He becomes the standard for evil. But then along comes Hearst (well, first his gemologist, then Hearst) and our perspective…

Really interesting topic. I have friends who consider *anything* about a film they are looking forward to a spoiler — even a single line or plot point that doesn't really reveal anything. I have one friend who even tries to avoid see posters (not sure how successful he could possibly be there).

Nothing was worse than that added weight on Apollo, but otherwise agreed.
I'm surprised neither of you brought up two movies that successfully adapted books I thought unadaptable, in part by making significant — and smart — changes to the storytelling: Fight Club and American Psycho. The former's plot is pretty radically transformed (most notably the last act) in a way that makes it…
Or, as I call it, "E-dubs." (I don't really call it that.)
The correct answer is "Jesus Christ" by Big Star: http://www.youtube.com/watc…
My issue with the whole "this is thanks to the horrors of what the country has gone through" argument essentially boils down to: then make a movie about those horrors. The metaphorical level adds what exactly?
