He used to be a promising Civil Rights attorney promoting African-American rights. He is kind of tragic figure in a way.
Strange fact: the crime rate dropped at the same time income inequality began to rise.
I recently read "The Bleeding Edge" by Thomas Pynchon and it does a nice job showing that cultural change that happened post 9-11 you just described.
Brokeback Mountain still feels like it could be your average melodramatic soap opera story. The acting and visuals were superb but the core of the movie (plot and characters) were not very original
Spike Lee's latest movies are just as trivial as Crash
But Forrest does go against the grain several times:
He saves Lt. Dan's life after he is told to let him die
He waits for Jenny even after she says no.
He goes to a normal school after they said he can't
He helped pick up the Selma girl's book.

I secretly held this view.
@George_Liquor:disqus: Rand Paul wasn't in office during the Bush years. However, his father was and Ron Paul was one of the only politcians to vote against the patriot act and the iraq war. So Rand Paul has room to talk
The republicans are right for the wrong reasons but they are still right. And Ron Paul was actually one of the few politicians to vote against the patriot act, iraq war during the Bush administration so Rand Paul has some right to talk about that.
I agree with you. I still find it weird how many liberals are ditching these core values during the Obama era. There used to be this great and righteous outcry against the Bush administration for declaring war with approval and unconstitutional laws against our civil liberties.
He did the best solution: leave the country alone. What would you have done, got America involved in another war? I have theory that my fellow liberals are starting to be seduced by a war making executive.
The fact remains that most Russians don't support Pussy Riot. This is an excuse for America to flex its cultural superiority and trash talk Russia.
Obama was wrong on Snowden and wrong on Syria. Putin was right on both. I disagree with Putin on gay rights but I don't believe that America should be meddling into these affairs.
