I'm actually really surprised to see people debating his motives. It seemed to me from his actions and his expressions—both in that final scene and in the others, especially when he realized what a calculating shrew Lakshmi actually was—that he was genuinely trying to help his friend, about whom he genuinely cares.

Can't she? She made bourguignon the day she left SCDP, and didn't she make a nice meal for her parents too (I could be misremembering that one)? She's made meals for the kids, pancakes etc. I don't get the impression she's passionate about it or anything but I haven't gotten the impression she's terrible at it, either.
