The use of the phrase "the law of attraction" in the narration bugged me, since it means something else entirely in contemporary parlance.

No such implication. Between Rita's drinking, age and a genetic predisposition to abnormality (see her sister Pepper), she was taking a humongous risk carrying a baby to term. Plus, if the husband had ever had any sexual interest in Pepper, all three actors would have played those flashbacks a lot differently.
