I hate to be "that guy" given the mediocre response to the show, but did the author even watch this episode? The "main action" centered on George wanting to prove he could deal with kids, yes, but it began with Dorothy assigning the case to Doug and despite George's whining she wouldn't change her mind. It was only

It was okay I'll tune in again. Both reviewers really put their finger on it: without a dominant performer like John Lithgow to raise everyone's game there's something significant missing.

My favorite part of the episode didn't even get a mention, Book's plan. The "look play" between him and Mal, the curious nature of what he knows and how he knows it, and his delivery in the bay showdown are great. There are loads of great setups through Firefly's brief run, and Book's backstory was always the one I

All I cared about was getting on with the killing of that ugly thing Nina. Again.

The episode really missed the opportunity to beat on teenagers. And I mean, c'mon, that's all we really wanna see, right?

Boo! The episode was a lot of fun. This obsession with story arcs and character development should not come at the expense of entertainment every single time.

Such an awesome episode not jut of the series but all television. I still find it riveting but also a punch in the gut, this series had so many more stories to tell and given this triumph with such an early episode who knows what we would have gotten if Fox hadn't given up.

Good review, probably the same grade I'd give it. You didn't mention how much alike the new doctor and Hank look, I was surprised he wasn't hired right away as a proxy lol.

I guess this is a good example of why the AV Club shouldn't cover every show, even when it's just as a stray. Maybe there's something in giving preening Mad Men loving jag offs a place to slam stuff that's just trying to entertain rather than simulate watching paint drying, or giving the great writers of this site a

This obviously could be wild conjecture, and influenced by the fact that I watched the whole series DVD marathon style my first viewing, but I took the "failings" on the first season as the result of two assumed-by-me facts: JMS had a novel in his mind and only slowly figured how to adapted printed structure into
