I'd agree with you that their method isn't the best, but I think that's almost exactly how cattle are slaughtered so maybe the show was going for some kind of parallel?

I had a job that took me into the woods for months at a time (no undead walkers, thankfully) and I have to say, there were times when it felt like my cheap-ass digital watch that told me the time and date were my only connections to normal reality. It gets weird like that.
