The show I always compared Foyle's War to was Lewis, which is more lurid, but has a similar low-key (compared to his predecessor in that show) protagonist (who has an entirely different worldview, but I think that's down to place). This is a great post. I think you pretty much summarise everything one can mention about the skill in Kitchen's performance - as you say, Foyle can be a fairly contradictory character, but he somehow makes it work. Needless to say, it's a fun enough show.

Michael Kitchen has been consistently excellent in the role. He never overplays the character, which I think really nails how they envisioned Foyle.

Pretty much this. Like always, Idris Elba is great, but beyond that (and the obligatory Ruth Wilson appearance/s), it's nothing special. But, then again, one watches it for Idris Elba.
