The show I always compared Foyle's War to was Lewis, which is more lurid, but has a similar low-key (compared to his predecessor in that show) protagonist (who has an entirely different worldview, but I think that's down to place). That's another show which can fit into this middle ground between stereotypical ITV and

I. AM. SO. EXCITED. FOR. THIS.

This is a great post. I think you pretty much summarise everything one can mention about the skill in Kitchen's performance - as you say, Foyle can be a fairly contradictory character, but he somehow makes it work. Needless to say, it's a fun enough show.

Michael Kitchen has been consistently excellent in the role. He never overplays the character, which I think really nails how they envisioned Foyle.

This is a tremendous post, just wanted to say that.

Pretty much this. Like always, Idris Elba is great, but beyond that (and the obligatory Ruth Wilson appearance/s), it's nothing special. But, then again, one watches it for Idris Elba.

Oh man, it paints that one scene where he snapped at her, telling her how some poeple have "real problems" in a really terrible light…you're completely correct.

Well, "Canonbury" is in Islington, so I'm not sure if that would fit the "small-town murder mystery" goal, but more shows like Broadchurch? I'm okay with that. :)

I'm assuming you've seen Venus :)

It is indeed the best! (though understandable, since being A really seems like a full time job and a half)

Someone watched Silk on Sunday (or sometime before).

Who knows how it's going to work…but clearly Caleb got on a bus that SYMBOLISM changed to Ravenswood so there's that.

Or siblings, in the case of Aria up until that one plotline this season.

"it seems Cece and Ali may be working together"

I'm just really really really hoping they stick with it. I know I pumped my fists and yelled "yes!!!"

Eh. I'm waiting for the Talking Dead-style show about Talking Dead.

hey look some of the university of chicago libraries

They are; Aria initially came to the gym because it was Holden's gym or something like that. The first time she meets him, she says something along the lines of "is Holden here?".

Speak for yourself: personally, I think of the Dinotopia miniseries when I see him.

Yes! Bring back the do-rag!
