I think the point of her was to show the reality of Selina Kyle's existence, rather than the idealized notion of her criminal life. And as a contrast to Selina, lest we think all hookers are cat burgling badasses. Also there is usually a similar character hanging around Selina in the comics.

In general, I think Nolan's done an amazing job of taking the silly but loveable aspects of the Batman comics and turning them into something not only, reasonable, but awesome.

For those interested in reading the review, but reluctant to be exposed to plot points: I think reading the first three paragraphs and then the last paragraph was a really good way to get the gist of the reviewer's sentiments without being exposed to any of the plot.
