Would you recommend the manga?  I love all his movies but that seems a little intimidating to me.

I'm impressed.  When I was in fifth grade my English teacher showed the class Grave of the Fireflies, and even that couldn't keep kids quiet because they couldn't be bothered to read the subtitles.  I was absolutely devastated however, and still haven't revisited the movie out of fear.
