The reveal of the Crone's eyeless face scared me more than almost any other image this show has ever done. The screenshot in the review just brought it rushing all back…

I certainly think there's a difference between trying to be good and trying to be recognized as righteous, and I probably could have phrased that better. But I really do think that, at least for the beginning of the series (first half of the first season, plus a few episodes?) Justin really was trying to be good. The

I like the way the significance of the Tarot parallels is never explicitly spelled out (unless it is and I'm just missing it), and it just hangs around the fringes of the show as hints/atmospherics.

There are so many things to say about this episode, but I will try (and fail) to keep it short:

It's possible that my memory of Scudder is fuzzy, since HBO refuses to stream Carnivale for some reason, so I haven't actually been watching the episodes as I've been reading the recaps. So yeah, that would pretty much invalidate my entire theory…

I think the assessment of Ben as someone who refuses to give up his humanity in order to become an Avatar hits the nail on the head. It also provides a compelling reason to keep rooting for Ben beyond the abstract, he's-the-good-guy justification that the show could so easily fall into; the reason that we, as an

As far as the title card goes, I also look forward to it every week, but that's mostly because I like to see how long Castle (a.k.a., the show with the longest teases in television) will go before they show it. I think twelve minutes is the record :)

You actually find out in the appendices that, after staying in the Shire and living his life happily with his wife and kids, at the end of his life he does get on the boat and sail to Valinor, because he was technically a ringbearer (for like ten minutes, but I guess that counts).

Knauf's original pitch document is ridiculously long, and contains a full (if sketchy) plan for the entire series. It explains a lot of the mythology. You can find it here: http://www.harvardwood.org/…

First of all: Seriously, it has been so much fun to finally be able to talk about Carnivale the way one could talk about, say, Lost during it's run. I always felt like no one else watched this show, and I'm really happy to be wrong. Can't wait for season 2.

It wasn't until I rewatched "My Philosophy" after experiencing the whole Janitor/Lady arc that I realized it was the same actress. @levydr:disqus , like you, I like to imagine that Kit Pongetti is, in fact, playing the same character here (do we ever find out what Lady's job is? If we do, I don't remember), and that

I totally agree with everything that everyone has said, and I actually do quite like Stahl in this role. And I think @avclub-453f2cc28c88e7d65746a7694ddd5d0b:disqus and @avclub-d019eb089e65903455cc52308f00b997:disqus are right that it's really a result of the mythology; Ben is light, so he wants to be good and not use

One of the reasons that Ben's motivations re: Ruthie don't make a lot of sense (a problem that is hardly confined to the Ruthie storyline, as @intangible_fancy:disqus and @avclub-453f2cc28c88e7d65746a7694ddd5d0b:disqus  pointed out), is the fact that Stahl is playing against the fantastic, magnetic Clancy Brown.

I was in high school when Carnivale first aired, and my notebooks were filled with drawings of the tree tattoo. It's such a creepy, beautiful, evocative image. (You know, kind of like any other image from the show)

It's definitely not on HBOGO, as I was upset to find out the other days when looking for it in order to follow along with the recaps. :(
