I think CC just wasn't the right actress for the part as it was written. Once more of her started to leak through and Ivanova became less stoic and tortured and more exasperated and humorous (but still tortured), she and the character clicked.

What's odd is that I actually like both successor bands better than At the Drive In. That's purely a matter of taste and doesn't invalidate your point, but somehow the "pure" radio rock and free-jazz-with-guitars styles work better for me on their own than in combination.
