The pre-sinking part of the movie is absolute bunk. It's some of the corniest shit ever.

The sinking is masterfully directed. Cameron managed to make a chaotic disaster coherent and easy to follow. There was nothing that impressive in Avatar, which makes me think that Cameron has lost his directorial vision. He had a great run though.
